    Lankan Navy foils bid to smuggle ganja

    The Sri Lankan Navy personnel who were patrolling near Delft Island spotted fishermen trying to smuggle ganja and seized the contraband, on Sunday. However, the fishermen fled from the spot.

    Sources said that the boats of the fishermen were anchored close to each other and when the Sri Lankan Navy boat went near one of the boats (one belonged to Tamil Nadu and another one to Sri Lanka), the fishermen threw 25 sealed packets into the sea and escaped from the spot.

    The Navy personnel instead of chasing the fishermen seized the sealed packets. When they checked the packets, they found ganja inside them.

     Following the seizure, the fishermen took the ganja packets to Kankesanthurai Port and handed them over to the naval camp. The total weight of the ganja packets was 56 kilograms and its total value in international market is rated to be Rs 30 lakh. The Sri Lankan Navy had also informed the Indian Coast Guard officials about the incident and the Coast Guard personnel had started then went in search for the boat.

    Refugee held for growing ganja 

    In another incident, a Sri Lankan refugee, Kumar, at Thalamuthunagar Sri Lankan Refugee Camp in Thoothukudi, was arrested for growing ganja plants in his house.

    Based on the information, Thalamuthunagar police inspected the house of Kumar. They destroyed the plants and arrested Kumar.
