Fishermen drop strike plan after CM shoots off letter to Prime Minister
Rameswaram fishermen observed a one day strike, on Wednesday, in protest against the action of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), who reportedly opened fire on their colleagues. Around 700 mechanised boats did not venture into the sea.

ICG personnel in Ship Queen Abbakka had opened fire on a boat, injuring two fishermen. Based on the complaint from Pitchai, one of the injured, an FIR was filed against the ICG personnel. On Wednesday morning, some members of the DMK visited Rameswaram GH and inquired about the health of the injured fishermen.Â
The State Minister for Information Technology M Manikandan, along with Ramanathapuram Collector, S Natarajan, visited the hospital and inquired about the incident. The Minister handed over Rs 5 000 to each of the fishermen.Â
Meanwhile, ICG personnel called the fishermen leaders for talks in the evening. They said that they are not sure about who had shot at them but promised that such incidents would not happen in future.
Meanwhile, the fishermen have suspended their Thursday strike plan after the CM wrote a letter to Prime Minister. Asking the Centre and State to make coordinated efforts to support the livelihood of the state fishermen, TMC leader GK Vasan, in a statement, urged the union government to ensure that ICG protect Indian fishermen. Condemning the attack, Vasan asked the Centre to hold an inquiry in to the incident.
