It is said, Saminathan (53) of Arulananda Nagar in Thanjavur boarded a bus from Chennai Parry’s Corner at 11 pm on November 4, with a cash of Rs 95 lakh, to be handed over to AVM Associate Finance Company in Tiruchy.

The bus reached Tiruchy the next day at 5 am and Saminathan was waiting for his friend at a tea shop near Tiruchy Junction. Suddenly, a youth entered the tea shop, took Saminathan’s cash bag and fled the scene with another person, who was waiting on a two-wheeler outside.

Shocked, Saminathan lodged a complaint with the Cantonment Police Station, along with the registration number of the bike. Based on the complaint, Commissioner of Police A Arun formed a special team led by an Assistant Commissioner to nab the culprits. The special team combed the CCTV footage in the locality and identified the culprits.

In the wee hours of Friday, the police team arrested the gang at Valividu Murgan Temple premises. Police sources said that all three accused persons were from Chennai.

They were identified as M Sahubar Sathik (28) of Erukkancherry in Kodungaiyur, K Raja alais Thiagu alais Thiagarajan (24) of Ayyappanthangal and P Manikandan alais Anjan (25) of Chetpet.

During the interrogation by the special team, the gang revealed that all of them worked as petty agents in Burma Bazzar. The gang also confessed that they had noticed Saminathan boarding the Tiruchy bus, with heavy cash in a bag.

So, they decided to follow the bus on their two-wheeler.

When Saminathan reached Tiruchy, they noticed him entering the tea shop with the cash bag and robbed it.

Subsequently, the police recovered Rs 76 lakh from them. The police also seized a motor cycle, a laptop, a tab and five mobile phones from the trio.

Later, they were produced in court and were remanded.
