The Madras High Court on Wednesday set aside an order detaining under Goondas Act the five accused in the Kodanad Estate murder and dacoity case.
Chennai
A division bench comprising Justice Rajiv Shakdher and Justice N Satish Kumar quashed their detention after holding that their representations were not considered in accordance with law. The five persons-Udayan, Satheesan, Tippu, Jamshed Ali and Manoj-- were arrested on different dates in May and were under judicial custody when the detention orders were issued on July 17.Â
The murder of a security guard and break-in at the Kodanadu estate bungalow belonging to former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had occurred on April 24.
Following this, police named seven persons as accused in the incident. But the prime suspect Kanagaraj, a former driver of Jayalalithaa, who had plotted the crime with other accused had died in a road accident in Salem in April. Another accused Shiyan was also involved in a road accident sustaining severe injuries. He was arrested by the police later.
