Economy stood still after demonetisation: TN Opposition parties
Various political parties staged a black day protest commemorating the anniversary of demonetisation and attacked the BJP-led Centre claiming that the note ban had made the Indian economy in a bad shape.

DMK Principal Secretary Durai Murugan who led the protest in Tiruchy, said, “The demonetisation had made the entire nation suffer an economic blockade. Prime Minister had announced the decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes without ascertaining the opinion of the union cabinet or even the finance minister. How can the Prime Minister stall the withdrawal of currencies which have been authorised by the Reserve Bank Governor?” he questioned. He asked the Prime Minister if he was
successful in the fight against black money as he had promised soon after the announcement of demonetisation. Meanwhile, former union minister T R Baalu, who led the protest in Thanjavur said, the taxes on the petrol stood at 133% and on diesel stood at 96%. He further added when the UPA was in power the crude price at international market was around $107 per barrel where as it came down to $53, till the petrol, diesel price was not reduced. When the UPA was in power at the Centre, the GDP rose from 7.9% to 9.59% whereas during the BJP led NDA rule, the GDP had come down to 3.7%. He said even the former finance minister from BJP Yashwant Sinha had pointed out that the BJP Government had frittered away the advantage of the fall in the crude prices, added Baalu.
HDK observes ‘Black money eradication day’
MADURAI: While opposition parties observed November 8 as a ‘Black Day’, Hindu Desiya Katchi (HDK) observed the day as ‘Black Money Eradication Day’, at Tirunelveli, on Wednesday and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for taking such a bold step of demonetisation.
HDK cadres led by the state general secretary E Esakki Iyappan, offered special prayers at the river Thamirabarani banks for Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes which were banned last year on the same day. Following that, they had torn the rupee printed on a paper and left it in river. Esakki Iyappan said that Congress is a party of capitalists and its economic policies had ravaged the entire country. He said, “If Congress comes to power again the people of the country would become pauper again. So, to save the country from the Congress, Modi should be re-elected and only he could take such daring steps for the betterment of the nation.”
