Thoothukudi cops help villagers desilt well
It is rare for police personnel to join hands with the public for a community project. That is what policemen attached to Ettayapuram police station did on Sunday. In order to save water during the monsoon, policemen along with residents of Ilambuvanam village in Thoothukudi district began desilting a well in the village.

The drought of 2016 had wreaked havoc in Thoothukudi district. Most of the water bodies went dry resulting in crop failure and drinking water scarcity. Thanks to the NE monsoon this year, there has been good rain so far and they have been dilsilting water bodies across the state to store water.
Ilambuvanam is one of the villages near Ettayapuram where dry land farming is practised and people are largely dependent on rainfall. As there has been sufficient rainfall so far, youngsters from the village along with social activists had decided to desilt wells that act as drinking water sources for the village. “We are doing it to prevent water scarcity during summer,” said the youth.
When the youngsters proposed the idea to Ettayapuram police Inspector, Ramaiah, he had informed thems that police personnel would also extend their support in desilting the well and on Sunday, Ramaiah along with his personnel joined the youth of the village.
As the well was not desilted for several years youngsters got inside the well and cleared the debris. Social activist, Kumar, who was involved in desilting, said that youngsters in every village should involve themselves in cleaning the water bodies in their village without expecting help from the government and such measures would result in the prosperity of the entire village.
