    Sexual harassment in work place: 32 collectors summoned

    Passing orders on a plea, which stated that even after 18 years of the ‘Vishaka’ Judgment passed by the apex court, many women suffer sexual harassment at work places, the Madras High Court directed all the 32 District Collectors in TN to file a report on the steps taken to enforce the provisions of Sexual Harassment of Women at Work Places (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013.

    The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar before whom a PIL from R Karuppusamy of Erode district seeking a direction to ensure constitution and functioning of Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) in all the mills, factories and other work places, came up also impleaded the Directorate of Social Welfare Department in the case. 

    Petitioner’s counsel P Selvi, while referring to instances of 15-year-old girls being sexually assaulted in the hostel within the mills, said, “Had the employers in the textile mills and factories constituted ICC it would have aided in the prevention of sexual harassment cases.” 

    The plea also sought for a direction to register and monitor the hostels run for girls and working women in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Hostels and Homes for women and Children(Regulation) Act 2014.
