The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar, passing orders on the letter written by Varadharajapuram residents on October 16, said, “Even though notice of eviction had been issued, no action has been taken for removal of encroachments to prevent flooding of the area.”
On recording Government pleader (In-charge) Rajagopalan’s submission that as many as 17 writ petitions have been filed in the High Court relating to encroachments on Adyar River of which eight have been disposed while nine of them are still pending adjudication, the bench on directing the GP to get instructions directed the registry to post all the pending writ petitions along with the present suo motu PIL before it on November 20.
Varadharajapuram residents had submitted in their letter that Adyar River, which passes through their area, has been bogged with encroachments affecting its flow while no action has been taken to remove them. This, they claimed resulted in the area getting flooded during the rainy season.
