Tiruvarur tragedy: 1 dies of shock on seeing rain-hit crop, another electrocuted
Heavy rain that lashed various parts of Nagapattinam district played havoc submerging large acres of agricultural lands. The scene at Tiruvarur was no different.

Farmers in this region are greatly affected by it and are worried about the huge losses they might incur if there is no respite from the rain.Â
It is said, on Thursday, Balakrishnan (52), who went to see his land in which he had cultivated samba in an acre was shocked to see his field inundated. When he saw the crops have been totally submerged, he fainted in the field. Soon, onlookers rushed him to the Tiruvarur Medical College Hospital where, he died despite treatment on Thursday.Â
Meanwhile, Kaliyaperumal (57), a farmer from Manalagaram village near Tiruvarur went to his field on Friday to drain the stagnant rain water from his field where samba paddy has been cultivated. He inadvertently stepped on to a snapped power line in his field and was electrocuted.  Similarly, in Vaitheeswarankoil, samba cultivated in 22, 000 acres is totally submerged in water after the breach in Rajendra canal in Tarangambadi and Hirunagari and Kovilaanvaaikkal canals.Â
As many as 300 houses were marooned and people evacuated to safety. Tarangambadi farmers fear that around 100 cattle have lost their lives in Nagapattinam district since Monday.
