Tamil Nadu to recruit 6,000 more cops

Only this year, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Service Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) recruited total of 15,000 for police, jail and fire departments. 

The board is planning to fast track the recruitment of another 6,000 personnel, a majority of who are expected to be posted as grade II constables, according to a senior officer in TNUSRB.  “A good number of them will be posted in the police department while other departments – jail and fire services, will be also adding some strength. We will also make sure that a proportionate number of women is recruited along with the men this time too,” he added. 

In 2016, the vacancies in the police department were over 23,500, while the sanctioned strength is 1.21 lakh. The department added nearly 900 sub-inspectors and more than 13,000 grade II-constables in the current year. “There will be more than 10,000 vacancies. The vacancy position keeps changing every month with policemen retiring, deserting the force besides getting dismissed from the service,” a senior police officer noted. With the next round of recruitment, the police department would have reduced the gap between sanctioned and actual strength.
