To assess the ground reality and the facilities available at Madurai GRH, Director of Medical Education (DME), Edwin Joe, inspected the fever ward and interacted with patients, on Thursday.

Following the inspection, Edwin Joe met the media and said that till now, over 600 patients have been admitted for fever and out of them 95 are said to be affected by dengue.
He also said that dengue was prevalent 15 years ago too but as people had the habit of taking more liquid food, it did not assume serious proportions and there arose no need for them to visit hospitals. But now, the virus has become virulent and people are forced to rush to the GHs and take proper treatment.
Due to wrong information spread in the social media, people ask the doctors to inject platelets. They should understand it is an unsafe practise. Only when there is dire necessity, platelets should be injected, explained the DME.
He said when people are admitted for dengue they are administered fluids intravenously but it is always better to take fluids orally. “Patients affected by dengue should take porridge and restrict solid food,” said the DME.
