V Sriram of Mannady has submitted in his plea that owing to a social gathering they had purchased four 180 ml bottles of premium rum manufactured by Elite distilleries Pvt Ltd, D Walajabad and another four 180 ml bottles of Limon rum manufactured by SNJ distilleries Ltd from a Tasmac outlet at Ganesan Avenue in Koyambedu. But on consuming the liquor, he and his friends suffered from severe vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

Suspecting adulteration behind it, a complaint was lodged with the Food Safety Department by his advocate friend, which in turn, forwarded the samples to a food lab in Thanjavur for analysis on April 10, 2017.

The report sent to them on June 20, 2017 revealed that the sample was found to be substandard. However, the report said that no action was initiated by the Food Safety Department against the manufacturers. The plea further noted that to countercheck the standards, other samples were drawn from the same companies and submitted for analysis at an accredited lab in Chennai.

The report revealed that the total acids in the premium rum worked out to 815, while the prescribed norm as per IS 3811-2006 should not exceed 200. Similarly, another check of the Limon rum revealed the residue on evaporation as 6.98 per cent which as per norms should not exceed 1.0 per cent while total acids worked out to 550 against the 200 norms.
