It is said, A Gideon Jacob (62) was running the children’s home at Subramaniapuram in the city, accommodating nearly 89 girls, mostly minors. However, it was not registered under the Juvenile Justice Act.

Meanwhile, following a public interest litigation petition filed by Change India, an NGO, a Division Bench appointed a committee headed by a woman judge, who presided over First Additional District Court, to inspect the home and ascertain the real picture. The petitioner had also accused the two-decade-old unregistered home of having picked up its inmates from Usilampatti near here and various other places without informing the government authorities. Presently, the home is under the care of the District Social Welfare department.

The police, who were searching for the founder, learnt that the latter had escaped to Germany. Subsequently, the case was transferred to the CBI. The CBI sleuths arrested Jacob at the Chennai airport and he was taken to Tiruchy by road. On Saturday, he was produced before the Judicial Magistrate Court II and remanded in judicial custody.

Meanwhile, Change India requested the state to reunite the girls with their parents, ensuring proper rehabilitation.
