Advising the government to also compensate the family of the victims, Stalin, in a statement, recalled how the victims had petitioned the collector and police there on multiple occasions and said the horse trading AIADMK regime should own moral responsibility for Tirunelveli self-immolation. Referring to a suicide bid in Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s function in Sivakasi on Monday, Stalin said that Tamil Nadu is slowly becoming difficult for the common man to live in peace.
He claimed that the problem of usury was eliminated in the DMK regime through the able functioning of women selfhelp groups numbering 1.25 lakh. Stalin said that he had brought the SHGs under his control when he had held the office of deputy Chief Minister and local administration minister in the 2006-11 regime.
He alleged that the SHGs were only used for mobilising crowd for rallies receiving the Chief Minister and above all distributing cash to voters. Stalin said the SHGs and their family members lost their self-sufficiency and have gone to usurers owing to misuse of groups during the AIADMK regime.
Joining the issue, state Congress president Su Thirunavukkarasar urged the state govt to pay Rs 25 Lakh as compensation to the family of self-immolation victims and order a high-level probe in to the incident.
