The deceased were identified as Subbulakshmi, wife of Isakimuthu, her two daughters, Madhu Sarvinya (5) and Akshaya Barnika (one-andhalf-years), from Kasitharmam village near Tenkasi.

Police said that Isakimuthu had obtained a loan of Rs 1.45 lakh from a money lender Muthulakshmi, from the same village. He repaid Rs 2.34 lakh. Despite repayment of the full amount, Muthulakshi kept harassing the family.

Then Isakimuthu approached the police, but they reportedly colluded with Muthulakshmi. He also petitioned the Tirunelveli Collector six times. But, no action was taken on the moneylender. Unable to tolerate it further, the family took the extreme step on Monday. People visiting the Collectorate were shocked to see the tragedy unfold in front of the Collector office. All the four, suffered 80 per cent burns.
