Dengue: Kovai hospitals, firms fined for lapse
With the dengue threat looming large, the Salem Corporation is swooping down on hospitals and establishments to check the breeding of mosquitoes. After a series of inspections, the civic body authorities slapped a fine amount of Rs 24.25 lakh on various private institutions in a single day on Sunday.

Officials conducted a surprise inspection at Shanmuga Hospital in Asthampatty and found poisonous snakes in tanks stored with drinking water. Also, bio medical waste was dumped in its premises and into the canal flowing nearby without adapting safe disposal methods.Â
The larvae of dengue causing aedes mosquitoes were found in water stagnating in dumped plastic and medical waste besides the drinking water tank.Â
The officials initially slapped a fine amount of Rs 2 lakh, but the hospital management argued against the action and failed to co-operate. Thereafter, the Corporation Commissioner R Satheesh raised the fine amount to Rs 10 lakh.Â
