Palaniswami gave away appointment orders to new recruits selected by the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB), which recruits personnel for the Police, Fire and Rescue and Prison departments. He pointed out that the state is a pioneer in recruiting transgenders for the force. Four members from the community were among the new-recruits.
Palaniswami assured that the force would be devoid of vacancies and efforts are on to fill around 6,000 openings in the police department.
Palaniswami observed that service personnel should neither show hatred, nor show favour while discharging their duties. “You should be courteous, careful, humble and caring while dealing with people’s complaints and be honest and unbiased. These will be your foremost duty and premise,” he said. He further said they were working diligently towards maintaining peace, law and order and harmony in state, and drew the routine parallel to the force at being par with the Scotland Yard. “The state police department has been working efficiently to ensure that nation’s integrity was upheld at all cost and there was no terrorism in the state. The force had effectively ensured terrorism did not raise its head in the state,” Palaniswami added.
He also said that during times of natural calamities, the cops have been coordinating well with the other departments to ensure that normalcy returned at the earliest. “The Fire and Rescue services, along with police, had performed exemplary work during natural disasters by coordinating with other agencies. Cops also work towards the betterment of the life of the prisoners and refine them,” he said.
Stating that adequate numbers of police personnel, including women, as primary reason for reduction in crimes against women, he recalled the launch of the All Women Police Station(AWPS) by the late CM J Jayalalithaa in 1992, as among the key initiatives ensuring safety of women.
