Speaking to reporters, after visiting dengue-afflicted patients at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) on Thursday, Premalatha said that the government is least bothered about keeping the state clean.

“Dengue spreads due to lack of cleanliness and hygiene. As there is no local body in place, stagnation of sewage has become a common problem in all wards, causing the spread of dengue. The government is no more interested in the welfare of the people,” she said.

Premalatha said that Tirupur and Tiruvallur are among the most affected districts in the state. Pointing to the claims of the state that 40 persons had died of dengue, she said that Coimbatore district alone may account for more than 100 deaths.

“There is no transparency as dengue deaths are covered up as mysterious fever. In this government, everything including the death of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa is shrouded in mystery,” she said.

Commenting on the Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s visit to Delhi, Premalatha said that it could be to safeguard his position.
