Local body polls: DMK moves contempt plea
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has moved the Madras high court seeking to punish the State authorities including the State Election Commissioner and Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Election Commission, for failing to abide by its order of publishing the notification announcing elections to local bodies within September 18.
Chennai
Senior Counsel P Wilson appearing on behalf of DMK made a mention before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundrar, about the non-compliance of its orders of first bench to complete election process by November 17.Â
He submitted that more than 15 days has lapsed since the court direction in this regard on September 4. But the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission had deliberately waited until September 16 and thereafter filed the petition seeking to keep the order in abeyance.Â
He also noted that owing to the local body elections not being held, the Rs. 4,000 crore set-apart for Tamil Nadu by the Centre is going waste.Â
However, the bench on finding as to whether the contempt plea has already been filed agreed to hear it on October 9.Â
The contempt plea while seeking for a direction to complete the election within the time frame already fixed, sought the court to punish the respondents by imposing maximum punishment as contemplated under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971, by imprisoning them.
