1.75 lakh footfalls at Kalam memorial in 4 days
Nearly 1.75 lakh tourists visited the Kalam Memorial at Peikarumbu near Rameswaram, in the last four days, according to officials posted there. Thanks to the Ayutha Pooja holidays coupled with the weekend and Gandhi Jayanti, tourists had ample time to visit some of the destinations such as Dhanushkodi and Rameswaram.

A police personnel on security duty at the memorial explained that the entry of every tourist is recorded at the door frame metal detector and in the last four days around 1.75 lakh tourists had visited the memorial. However, tourists were not happy about the basic amenities. There were lots of complaints such as lack of proper drinking water and restriction of mobile phones inside the memorial.
“These cause a lot of problem to us. We will be happy if mobile phones are allowed inside. As most of us are tourists, our relatives need to contact us in case of an emergency, said Balachander, a tourist from Theni.
“Why can’t officials place treated water in the memorial. There is no locker facility available to leave the cell phones.
As a result, one from the family is forced to stay back and forego the visit inside the memorial for safe keeping of the phones,” rued another tourist.
