    10 tonnes of garbage cleared along Cauvery after Pushkaram

    More than 10 tonnes of garbage were collected by the civic workers when they organised a mega clean-up operation of the Cauvery, on Wednesday, along with college students after the Maha Pushkaram celebrations.

    Devotees across the state and neighboring states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala had participated in the once in 12-year-event. After the celebrations, there was a heavy left over of plastics, clothes and food waste along the river bed. The City Corporation had to necessarily organise a mega clean up drive. Students from Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College, Shrimati Indira Gandhi College, Seethalakshmi Ramaswami College and St Joseph’s College were roped into the task. They came to the river banks at 9 am and began collecting garbage. They were joined by over 100 sanitary staff.

    The team collected loads of polythene covers, dried flowers, food wastes, clothes and plastics that were thrown into the Cauvery by the devotees.

    During the drive, students and sanitary workers emphasised that the public should stop plastic carry bags for making Tiruchy a plastic free city. They also sensitised the public to keep their environment clean and work hand in hand with the efforts taken by the Corporation.

    District Collector K Rajamani, City Corporation Commssioner N Ravichandran inaugurated the clean-up.
