Fishermen leave for Lanka to bring back detained boats
A delegation of 53 fishermen and technicians led by Rameswaram Assistant Director of Fisheries Isaac Jayakumar left for Sri Lanka on Wednesday morning to repair and bring back seven mechanised fishing trawlers, released by the island nation recently.
A senior official in the fisheries department here said that the salvage operation is expected to take a few days and the boats are likely to be either towed or bought back by the end of this week.
Sri Lankan government released the first batch of 42 boats out of 182 held in its custody since 2015 as a goodwill gesture. The boats owned by fishermen of Rameswaram, Pamban, Mandapam, Nagapattinam and Karaikal in Puduchery were impounded by Sri Lankan naval personnel.
Out of the 42 boats released by Lanka, most of them were in a bad condition.
