    Rs 9,000-crore solar power deal inked

    The state government on Tuesday signed an MoU with 16 power companies to set up solar power plants at a total cost of Rs 9,000 crore for generating 1,500 MW of electricity.

    The MoU for power procurement between Tangedco and 16 companies including NLC India, Rasi Green Earth Energy, NarbheramVishram Power and NVR Energy, was signed in the presence of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, an official press release here said. 
    The tenders called for procuring power at Rs 3.47 per unit were issued and the Tangedco approved 16 companies for setting up the solar power plants. The other companies include Race Power Infra, Solitor PTN, Sai Jothi and Dev International. A total of 709 MW would be procured from NLC alone, the release added.
    The state already had solar power plants generating 1,747 MW and similar power plants to generate 700 MW would be set up this year. When the MoU comes into force, the state would have a total capacity of 5,000 MW of solar power by the year 2021. 
    Electricity Minister P Thangamani, Chief Secretary GirijaVaidhyanathan, Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Ranjan and Tangedco chairman M Saikumar were present at the function.
