Train runs over 10 peacocks on Pamban bridge
Generally birds fly away when a moving object approaches them. It is strange that neither the honking by the train driver nor the vibration caused by the train deterred 10 peacocks sitting on the train track on Pamban bridge. As a result, they were run over by a train on Friday.

According to Murugan, a fisherman from Pamban, there were 15 birds sitting on the rail bridge. As the train approached them, five flew away when the driver sounded the horn.
Surprisingly, the remaining stayed on the tracks though the driver honked continuously.
As a result, the birds were run over by the speeding train.
“All the wounded birds fell into the sea. It was sad to see their plight and we therefore urge the railway authorities to take steps to prevent the birds from sitting on the rail track,” said Murugan.
“May be the pleasant weather prevailing at Pamban attracts more birds,” he added.
“We enjoy the huge birds flocking the rail and road bridge,” said the tourists. Unfortunately, both the bridges have now turned into a death traps for these birds.
According to officials, in July, a pair of birds were found dead on the road bridge and they were of the view that they would have been hit by an unknown vehicle.
Commenting on the incident, a Railways official, who was unaware of the incident, said that trains travel at less than 20 km per hour on the Pamban bridge.
Peacocks usually fly away on seeing the train. But, what happened on Friday was something unexpected, added the official.
