Centre asked to permit 4th phase of excavations at Keezhadi
The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Thursday in an observation stated that the Union government should give permission for the fourth phase of excavation at Keezhadi archeological site.
Madurai
Petitioner Kanimozhimathi from Chennai had stated that Keezhadi is spread across 110 acres and more than 5,300 artefacts had been unearthed in the first and second phases of excavations. So, an onsite museum should be set up at Keezhadi, prayed the petitioner. On Thursday, when the petition was heard, the counsel for the petitioner argued that the third phase of excavation would be closed by September 30 and the court should direct the Centre to extend the excavation in the next phase too. Â
The judges then observed that the Centre should give permission for the fourth phase. They added that the excavation should be carried out at a much larger area and if the state applies for taking over the excavation, the site can be handed over to them. After the observation, the judges adjourned the petition to Friday.
