Man commits suicide in front of police station
A 42-year-old dalit man had committed suicide in front of Vaniyambadi police station recently. To cover up the issue, Vaniyambadi police had booked a case against the wife of the deceased and also arrested her, said A Kathir, Executive Director of an NGO based in Madurai working for the welfare of dalits.
Madurai
The deceased identified as Anbu from Vaniyambadi had gone to Vaniyambadi town police station on September 8, and informed the police that there is some dispute in his family and wanting to book a case against his wife. Policemen had abused him verbally and sent him out. Later, Anbu had returned to the police station with a kerosene can and torched himself outside the station. Though he was rushed to the hospital, he succumbed on September 11.Â
In the meantime, Anbu had given a dying declaration to the Magistrate, in which he had blamed the police for his death, said Kathir. Speaking to DTNext, Kathir said that Anbu had a dispute with his wife Nalini, since she had sent Anbu’s parents away from their house. Due to this, Anbu had approached Vaniyambadi police to file a case against his wife but, as policemen had refused to hear him out, he committed suicide.Â
But, however, police in order to divert the case had threatened Anbu’s parents and got their signature stating that Nalini had tortured them and she was responsible for Anbu’s death. Now, Anbu’ parents are missing.Â
Police, after obtaining their signature had arrested Nalini and remanded her. Kathir also demanded the police department to book a case against the policemen attached to Vaniyambadi station and requested to provide compensation of Rs 25 lakh for Nalini.
