Petitioner, KK Ramesh from Madurai, in his petition, stated that a strict action should be taken against traffic violators.
Recently, more number of vehicle users were penalised for drunken driving and for conversing over mobile phones while driving. Such people should also be fined heavily and their original licence seized, he said.
Also, the police department should introduce a new number to report for traffic violations and the court should direct the police department to issue a circular to all the police stations and RTO offices, prayed the petitioner.
When the petition was heard by judges, KK Sasidharan, and GR Swaminathan, an affidavit submitted by the DGP stated that a new number, 94981 81457, to register complaints against traffic violations has been introduced. Steps are also being taken to publicise the number, stated the affidavit.
