According to weathermen, there is an off-shore trough from South Karnataka to Kerala coast and it can result in heavy rains particularly in Western region. After a few days of lull in thunderstorms with winds pattern changing back to Westerlies, rain possibilities have returned for north Tamil Nadu. Friday saw fairly intense thunderstorms to the West and North-West of Chennai at about 50 km distance though, thanks to the extremely weak wind pattern, they made the movement towards the coast.
An official of RMC said, “Chennai and adjoining parts of north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh are under an East-West breakable zone type of pattern which is normally conducive for thunderstorms to be developed. With Westerlies strengthening, the storms have started to reach the coast now compared to a day or two.”
K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger, said, “We are now seeing a wind pattern that is possibly reflecting the pre-monsoon low preparations by Bay of Bengal with a slightly scrambled wind pattern also happening, thanks to the prevalence of Easterlies for so many days.”
Undoubtedly, the chance of rains for Chennai is high for the next two days possibly, he added.
