20-year-old dies while clicking selfie at Rameswaram jetty

The incident happened on Friday evening when a group of students from a private engineering college at Ramanathapuram visited Rameswaram beach. The students were at a fish jetty in Mukundarayar Chathiram and were taking selfies at the edge of the jetty when a huge wave hit it. One of the students, Ajit Kumar, a resident of Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi district, fell into the sea by its impact.

Three of his friends jumped into the sea to save him but could not find him. They then called up the Marine police who reached the spot and tried to look for Ajit but in vain. After sunset, he was feared drowned.

On Saturday morning, Ajit’s body washed ashore. The Marine police then sent it to Rameswaram GH for post-mortem. It was then handed over to his parents.
