    2,290 kg dry ganja seized, two held

    In a major haul, officials of Andhra Pradesh prohibition and excise (Enforcement Wing) here on Tuesday seized 2,290 kg of dry ganja worth over Rs 2 crore near Uppa area under Hukumpeta mandal in Vizag and arrested two persons when the duo was transporting the contraband in a van.

    The arrested two tried to smuggle the hemp to Tamil Nadu. Assistant Commissioner of Prohibition and Excise (Enforcement Wing) SVVN Babji Rao said on a tip off, their officials had intercepted a heavy vehicle at Uppa village where they recovered huge quantity of weed packed in bags. 

    The accused had stuffed ganja in gunny bags, placed them in their vehicle, and covered it with a tarpaulin cover. A pilot vehicle was ahead to caution the vehicle carrying the contraband, he said.  

    The driver of the heavy vehicle and the pilot reportedly fled the scene. The arrested were identified as VV Chinna Rao (27) of G Madugula Mandal and J Bala Murugan (32) of Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Police sources said the duo was given a contract to make sure that the ganja reached Karasapadu area, from where others would join to take it till Tamil Nadu. The police seized one four-wheeler, one motorcycle, Rs 24,000 and a mobile phone.
