13 key resolutions likely to be adopted at AIADMK General Council

AIADMK’s supreme body, the General Council (GC) which meets here on Tuesday, is expected to take crucial decisions that may influence its future with the likely ouster of jailed general secretary VK Sasikala, and thus herald a new era in the state’s largest political party.

“The GC is expected to adopt nearly 13 resolutions on all state-related issues like NEET and the ongoing agitations at Naduvasal and Kadiramangalam, but primacy will be given to the resolution which seeks to remove jailed incumbent (general secretary) VK Sasikala from her post,” according to MP and GC member V Maitreyan. “Sasikala’s removal will automatically remove Dinkaran from his post as he was appointed by her,” he added.

The GC has around 2,500 members while the executive committee has around 250 members. However, sources revealed that Tuesday might see only the GC in action. The GC is also expected approve formation of a committee to run party affairs in the absence of the general secretary. The general secretary post will, for the time being , remain empty as presently there is no charismatic leader like MGR and Jayalalithaa, both former general secretaries. “Even if Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is able to conduct the meet successfully, he still has to prove his majority in the assembly to be on top of the government,” party sources said. The meeting is expected to start by 10.35 am and end in one hour.

The modus operandi followed for the GC held on December 29 last year is being followed for the present meet also, sources revealed. The venue is also the same, the Srivari Marriage hall at Vanagaram on the outskirts of the city. The last GC witnessed high drama with Saiskala being nominated interim general secretary, which ultimately led to the rebellion by O Paneerselvam.

GC members – including town, panchayat union and district secretaries in addition to one member from each assembly constituency – have been asked to eschew their own vehicles and come in the buses arranged by party functionaries.

“Ministers, MLAs and district secretaries have been taxed with bringing all members to the venue on time” a former GC member stated. “The invitation letter will be the ID and only those having this it will be allowed entry” an insider revealed.

    D-DAY FOR AIADMK

The first General Council meeting after the merger
of two factions headed by O Panneerselvam and Chief
    Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami
    of two factions.

Likely to decide on ousting jailed ‘interim’ party General
    Secretary V K Sasikala.

The meeting is significant amid calls for fresh trust
vote by the Opposition after 19 ‘rebel’ MLAs have formally
withdrawn their support to Chief Minister. Any adverse
action against Sasikala could provoke the TTV Dinakaran
camp and precipitate a crisis in the government.
