Chennai
In a PIL, Kanimozhi Mathi, of Chennai stated that Keezhadi spread across 110 acres would have had possible trade and cultural connections with other parts of the country. The articles excavated during the first phase have already been shifted to ASI’s South Zone headquarters in Bengaluru, the premier excavation agency that was also taking steps to shift rest of the antiquities.
It has been the policy of the Central Government to keep movable antiquities recovered from the ancient sites in close association with the remains to which they belong to so that they may be studied in their natural surroundings.
The court should not allow to shift the antiquities and also should direct the ASI to establish an site museum in Keezhadi, prayed the petitioner. When the petition was heard, on Monday, counsel representing Central government said that to set up an on site museum they need to inspect the site. Also, the government had requested the central committee of ASI to extend the excavation beyond September. The case was adjourned to September 18.
