When the counsel representing the Tamil Nadu Lorry Owners Federation presented before the first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M Sundar the plea about the interim stay and sought to extend it at least until Friday, the bench out rightly rejected it.

The Chief Justice, while observing that there can be no difficulty in carrying the original licence, said the argument that losing the licence due to carelessness or the card getting spoilt in rain cannot become larger public interest. She said prima facie there remains nothing illegal in the statutory order and that there exists no complication with the Act and the rules in this regard. The state government had made it mandatory for drivers to carry their original driving licence from September 1. Failure to do so would attract a fine or imprisonment or both.
