Campaign to save rivers begins in Kovai
We have been pushed into a sorry state of affairs where we need an awareness rally to remind us of the importance to save rivers, said Union Minister of Science and Technology, Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Earth Sciences Harsh Vardhan.

At the event organised by Isha Yoga Centre, the minister recalled that there was water in all the rivers in the country about three decades ago. The situation is totally different now with many of them turning dry. Stating that it is everyone’s responsibility to revive the rivers, he said doing it will be the greatest gift we can pass on to the next generation.
Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj said that our culture and civilizations used to be centred around rivers and that situation has changed now. She said that saving rivers is imminent to ensure that future generations do not suffer without water. Former Indian opener Virendra Sehwag and Formula 1 racer Narain Karthikeyan also extended their support to the cause.
Founder of the yoga centre Jaggi Vasudev said that a large number of farmers have committed suicide in 12 years and the prime reason being drought and poor price for their produce. He also attributed drop in agriculture to neglect of protecting rivers. He said that further neglect would result in a prime share of the country’s landscape turning into a desert.
