AIADMK Legislature Party meet on September 5

Amid demands to remove Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami by dissident MLAs, the AIADMK Legislature Party meeting will be held on September 5 for which invitations have been sent to supporters of the party’s sidelined deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran.

The dissident MLAs, however, are unsure if the event should be treated as an olive branch extended by EPS and OPS or the latter’s assertion of power. This would be the second edition of the AIADMK Legislature party meet since the election of EPS as its leader, and is timed a week prior to the general council and executive committee called by the ruling dispensation led by EPS scheduled on September 12.

Though no agenda for the meeting has been set, a few legislators believe the meeting could be yet another way for the ruling dispensation to get its ‘numbers’ right. MLA Thanga Tamilselvan (Andipatti), loyal to TTV, told DTNext, “We don’t know what the meeting’s agenda is. We haven’t decided on as to whether we should attend it or not. We would consult TTV on that count,” he said.

Sources said it is unlikely for the dissidents to attend the meet as they had written to the Governor withdrawing their support to EPS. “The dissidents were also asked to provide an explanation for their act by the Speaker on the same day. The chances for their suspension are highly likely,” a source added. It is also being said that legislators may discuss the implications of NEET in medical admissions in the wake of Anitha’s suicide.

MLA R Kanagaraj (Sulur), who was the first to go public with exerting pressure on the ruling faction to call a truce with TTV, said that he would have to rush back to the city for the meet. “I insisted to the CM that a truce be called with TTV. This issue will come up for discussion in the legislators meet as well. It could also help demarcate supporters of TTV from the ruling faction,” he observed.
