PMK flays reopening of Tasmac on National Highways

The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has condemned the state government for reopening TASMAC outlets along the National Highways (NH) and State Highways (SH), through a wrong interpretation of the Supreme Court’s direction that the nationwide ban on sale of liquor within 500 metres along the highways does not extend to urban areas.

PMK founder Dr S Ramadoss said in a statement on Saturday that the state has failed to comprehend the verdict of the Supreme Court and it has reopened the liquor shops on highways.

“The government should sense the fact that the court has not mentioned any such thing in its verdict that liquor outlets can once again be opened along the highways in urban areas,” he said and added that the Supreme Court only stated that liquor shops, which has licences could function in urban areas, but not along the highways.

Picking out this one line from the Apex court direction that the outlets can function in urban areas, the state has started reopening many liquor outlets along the highways, the PMK leader alleged. He added that many shops have been opened hurriedly in Chennai and other cities. “This is completely against the court’s direction. Even though such a verdict (reopening of outlets in urban areas) is unacceptable, the state government is misusing the ruling of the court,” he noted.
