Three AIADMK ally MLAs, M Thamimun Ansari (Nagapattinam), S Karunaas (Thiruvadanai), and U Thaniyarasu (Kangeyam) urged the Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to take steps to release convicts jailed for more than 10 years as a special gesture to mark the MGR centenary in the State.

The trio also thanked the CM for granting parole for Rajiv murder case convict AG Perarivalan aka Arivu.

“We insisted the government to consider our request on releasing convicts who had been jailed for more than 10 years. We have been pressing this since the budget session in the Assembly, and we have been receiving positive responses. We also thanked EPS for his action in the case of Arivu,” Karunaas told DT Next.

“We told him to talk to the party deputy general secretary Dinakaran to iron out their differences. The party has to complete full term and not fall due to any fissure,” Karunaas said.

He also made his allegiance to the AIADMK’s interim general secretary VK Sasikala public again, in a media briefing during the day.

Ansari, who charged that the BJP had taken control of their ally and charting its course, said, “we should not allow this to continue at any cost. We must protect the interests of the State. And, that will happen only if the factions unite”, he added.

Expressing similar views, Thaniyarasu observed that they had not taken any stand on the government and would decide on it as and when required. He hinted that they might support the ruling dispensation.
