Rules prevent aspirant for a transfer to MMC
Manas Das, a CBSE student, who is ranked 28th in the MBBS rank list, had got a seat in the Government Omandurar Multi Super Specialty Hospital and Medical College under the All India Quota (AIQ). However, owing to the reputation that Madras Medical College (MMC) commands, he is desperately trying to get a transfer to MMC.

Past the first round of counselling under the AIQ, he was allotted a seat at the Super Speciality College. However, he refrained from going for the second phase, as he was hopeful of getting a call for state counselling. “When the AIQ first round list was released, we were given seven days’ time to say whether we wanted to go for the second round of counselling or not. According to a Supreme Court verdict, if an individual joins a college through the second round, he is ineligible for counselling. Keeping that in mind, I said no to the second round,” he said.
However, after the release of the merit list, the Selection Committee stated that it is not in their hands to facilitate the seat transfer. “Tamil Nadu is the only state that has this problem. Owing to the delay in releasing the list, letting go of the All India Quota seat would prove a risk,” he added.
When contacted, an official said, “Existing rules under the Medical Counselling Committee are all framed at the All India level. As this is a peculiar year where the legal battle was fought till the end, any decision could affect one section of the students.” Due to the lack of an option, Das will take up the seat in Omandurar.
