Rajiv case: Payas plea adjourned
The Madras High Court on Wednesday adjourned the Habeas Corpus pleas moved by Rajiv Gandhi assassination convicts Robert Payas and Jayakumar to following Government submission that identical petitions are pending in the Supreme Court.
Chennai
A Division Bench comprising Justice A Selvam and Justice P Kalaiyarasan before whom the matter has come up on recording the submission made by the State posted the case for further hearing to October 3.
It may be noted that the case has been pending since 2012 when the duo moved the plea wanting to find whether their names figure in the list of convicts due for premature release on Republic day.Â
However, when the plea came up for hearing on August 18, the additional public prosecutor sought more time to file the present stand of the State since the one they had filed earlier pertained to the counter created in 2012. The 2012 counter was against the release of Payas, which was in total contrast to the State’s decision in 2014 to release all the seven convicts in the case.
