Stating that an organ alert was received by a team at Fortis Malar on Saturday morning, sources at the hospital said that a team of two harvesting doctors was sent to CMC for assessment of the organ. Post preliminary assessment, the organ was harvested at 3 pm by Dr Ganesan and Dr Mohan.

The lungs were transferred through an exclusive traffic coordination initiated by the hospital, stretching from CMC. The organ started at 3:40 pm from Vellore and reached Fortis by 5:40 pm. They were transplanted on a 24-year old man from Kazakhstan, who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, the release added.

The deceased’s organs also saved another life. That of a 27-year-old farmer from the city, who was suffering from heart failure who was given a second chance at life when he got the heart of the deceased. Gleneagles Global Health City’s organ transplant coordinator’s team received an alert about the available heart. The heart was then harvested and sent to Vellore Institute of Technology college at 3.10 pm for transportation. It left Vellore at 3:30 pm and reached the city at 4 pm. It then reached the hospital by 4.10 pm.

Vellore is located 140 kms from Chennai and transporting the harvested heart by road would be a gamble. The transplant team immediately thought of an alternative plan to bring the heart using helicopter, to save considerable amount of time, the release added.
