    LED lights: State’s delay in inking deal hits most districts

    The state government’s delay in signing an MoU with the Centre’s EESL (Energy Efficiency Services Limited) has resulted in LED lights and bulbs being provided only in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Vellore and Tiruvanamalai districts, said senior EESL officials.

    The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was a joint venture among NTPC (National Thermal Power corporation, REC (Rural Electrification Corporation), PFC (Power Finance corporation) and POWERGRID.

    Officials from EESL said that though it has been more than a month that they had been trying to sign the MoU after it was announced in the legislative assembly, there has been no response from the other parties so far. “When we asked the authorities, they said that the matter is being considered,” an EESL official said.

    On asking TANGEDCO officials about the reason for the delay in signing the MoU, they said, “The matter is under perusal.”

    Tamil Nadu is trying to gain entry into Ujala’s LED scheme where EESL plans to tap the Rs74, 000-crore energy efficiency market in India. In Tamil Nadu, southern railways was the first to procure 64, 555 LED bulbs which EESL hands out at a huge discount. Around 5.42 LED bulbs were sold in TN which Greater Chennai Corporation accounting for 4.59 lakh bulbs, followed by Kanchipuram with 12, 409 bulbs and 4,862 in Vellore.
