Documentary film maker Dhivya Bharathi plays the bridesmaid for Irom Sharmila

After the release of Kakkoos, the documentary movie, directed by Dhivya, which highlighted the issue of manual scavenging by Dalits, she was targeted by members of a Dalit party in Tamil Nadu and she was targeted online.

She received numerous death threat calls and despite making complaints to the police no action was taken.

Therefore, Dhivya Bharathi was forced to move out of Tamil Nadu and for a solitary life for a few weeks. On Thursday, as Irom Sharmila and Desmond Coutinho were getting married she sprang a surprise by joining them as a bridesmaid. From the beginning, she held Irom Sharmila’s firmly. After the marriage Dhivya accompanied the couple to their house. She said that it was a pleasure attending the marriage and remaining close to Irom. It was her long time dream to see Irom Sharmila at least once in her lifetime but she had never expected that she would be close to Irom Sharmila on the most important day of her life.

Irom Sharmila had expressed solidarity for Dhivya after she started receiving death threats.

The callers raised objections to her mentioning of scheduled caste as a depressed caste that is involved in manual scavenging in the documentary film.
