Orders on procedures to get Prez nod for TN’s NEET bill likely on August 23
Even as the Tamil Nadu government is pushing hard for an amendment that would exempt students from NEET for admission to government medical colleges in the State, the Madras High Court has reserved its judgment on a plea seeking to direct the Centre to complete the procedures for obtaining the Presidential assent for the Tamil Nadu Admission to MBBS and BDS courses Act, 2017.

The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice M. Sundar before whom the PIL filed by P. B. Prince Gajendra Babu, general secretary, State Platform for Common School System-TN, came up for hearing on Wednesday, posted it to August 23, for orders.
The bench reserved its orders after hearing arguments from the counsels appearing on behalf of the union Government that the petitioner ought to approach only the Supreme Court on NEET. It was also submitted that a decision on the request made by the Tamil Nadu Government to the Centre seeking exemption for NEET for this year through an amendment is expected in a day or two.
The petitioner had submitted that the state government from the beginning had insisted on its complete autonomy in respect of admission to professional courses including medical studies. The state passed the two Bills unanimously. These Bills awere later sent to the Presidential in February 2017 but are yet to be cleared.
