World Elephant Day is celebrated every year on August 12 to protect and preserve the jumbos across the world. On the day, various awareness programmes are conducted across the world about the critical condition of African and Asian elephants as they are placed in ‘vulnerable’ and ‘endangered’ categories respectively in the IUCN Red Data Book.

As part of the awareness programmes, the students attended a seminar on elephants. Jeyakanthan, NSS project officer, while addressing them, explained the difference between elephants in the wild and domesticated jumbos.

Following the seminar, the students took out a rally from the school to the Ramanathaswamy Temple and fed the temple elephant ‘Ramalakhsmi’ with bananas and sugarcane. The students also received blessings from the elephant and a large number of devotees, who visited the temple, witnessed the events.
