Timely rains boost prospects of black gram in Delta region
The recent rains have instilled a sense of positivity among the farmers who have undertaken black gram and Kuruvai crops in the Delta region. The rain is believed to have rejuvenated the ground water level and the farmers anticipate good yield from their cultivation. The forecast is also optimistic as moderate rain is foreseen which would help the crops.

Meanwhile, in Tiruchy, the farmers were encouraged to undertake cultivation of pulses as the water requirement for the crop is comparatively less.
They have also promoted to cultivate Vamban breed of back gram and most of the farmers depend on ground water as the hopes of water running in Cauvery are very less. “The continuous rainfall has recharged ground water in our region with which we can undertake the cultivation. Since we are advised to take up pulses cultivation owing to water shortage, the rainfall has become a blessing that would give support to the standing kuruvai cultivation”, said Parthiban, a farmer from Pullambadi region in Tiruchy.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Agriculture, R Santhanakrishnan said, “The showers were timely and substantial enough to sustain the standing Kuruvai and pulses crops. Kuruvai cultivation is likely to commence in Musiri belt. If such rains are witnessed periodically, the raised paddy crops can be harvested by October end with a decent yield.”
