In a petition to Additional Director General of Police that has taken many by surprise, the Hindu Makkal Katchi (HMK) has sought the police to prevent civil rights activist Irom Sharmila from marrying her partner Desmond Coutinho in Kodaikanal. The plea has also sought the police to evict the couple from the tourist town at the earliest.

HMK leader Rama Ravikumar, said that there is a motive behind Irom Sharmila’s proposed marriage in Kodaikanal and added that there is a huge network behind her. Irom Sharmila, who moved to Kodaikanal in April with Desmond Coutinho, a British national, recently announced that she was planning to get married in Kodaikanal and registered their intention to get married on July 12.

Meanwhile, citing news reports quoting Sharmila that she would fight for the rights of tribals in Kodaikanal, Ravikumar said that Sharmila is planning to add to the woes of Tamil Nadu, which is already reeling under a lot of protests. Another outfit-Uzhavar Uzhaipalar Sangam has also petitioned against allowing Sharmila’s marriage being held in Kodaikanal.
