Arrack sale on rise after TASMAC closure, complain women in Tanjavur
Traffic was disrupted for a few hours at Pandanallur-Mayiladuthurai road on Friday after a group of women from Kumbakonam staged a protest against the illegal sale of arrack in the area, especially after the TASMAC sale restrictions by the government. They also had the sachets used to sell the liquor with them.

The group claimed that arrack is freely available in the region and urged the government to curb the offence. According to reports, after the government restriction on the sale of liquor, spirit is illegally brewed and sold in sachets which are widely made available in Nallathadi village, Alagesapuram Panchayat near Kumbakonam.Â
The sale of smuggled IMFL bottles is also on the rise. The women have also lodged a complaint with the Panthanallur police station in this regard.Â
However, sources said that the police failed to act upon the complaint and hence, the women took to the streets, collected the sachets and conducted a stir at the Alagesapuram bus stand area and blocked vehicular movement.Â
The police reached the spot after receiving information and Panthanallur inspector Sindhunadhi held talks with the women. After the police assured them of action and announced the arrest of the people involved in the offense, the group withdrew their agitation. Â
