The 23-year-old journalism student of Salem Periyar University was detained for allegedly distributing pamphlets against the Neduvasal hydrocarbon project in Pudukkottai district.

A division bench comprising Justice A Selvam and Justice Pon Kalaiyarasan ordered notice on the habeas corpus plea moved by the girl’s father Madaiyan, returnable by August 7.

Valarmathi’s father in his plea submitted that after the arrest of Valarmathi on July 12, the Salem City Police Commissioner on July 17 had detained her under the Goondas Act.

He further noted that the detention of his daughter, who has been fighting for people’s cause peacefully, is ‘malice’ in law. The detention is per se ‘illegal’ and ‘abuse’ of power, he added.
