He said that the Prisons Department is keen on curbing the menace and the Puzhal Central Prison has 12 jammers installed for the purpose.
The ADGP, who was here for the past couple of days, inspected the prisons and urged the staff to be more alert as there were complaints about violation of prison norms.
“We have been planning to establish mobile phone jammers in all the prisons,” Sylendra Babu told reporters after inspecting the sub jail. Meanwhile, the ADGP said that the department is also planning to convert all the sub jails into district prisons.
“We have been identifying land for the Karur district prison and once land has been identified, the works would commence,” the ADGP added.
In the meantime, the ADGP said, out of the total 15,000 inmates lodged in nine central prisons across the state, 6,000 inmates have been pursuing education in various capacities and in Tiruchy Central Prison as many as 68 inmates have been continuing their education.
