Form special committee to probe into gutkha scam: PMK
The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has urged the government to form a special investigation committee headed by Director General of Police to monitor the probe into the simmering ‘gutkha scam’ in the state.
Chennai
Founder of PMK, S Ramadoss, in a statement, said that though many demanded for a CBI probe into the scam, the verdict of Madras High Court, which ordered DVAC to hold independent enquiry, was not satisfactory. “The probe should be fair and transparent but there is a fear about the enquiry being shoddy, since top bureaucrats and politicians are reportedly involved in the scam,” he said.
Stating that from Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar to top level police officials are under the radar in the big scam. Ramadoss said, “The enquiry committee members from DVAC are all working under the DGP. This raises suspicion that how can they conduct a proper enquiry.” The PMK leader suggested two ways to handle the probe. “Firstly, the state government should transfer the case to the CBI and secondly, a committee headed by a DGP rank official should be picked from the DVAC so that there will be proper investigation,” he said.
Ramadoss also expressed concern over the growing corrupt cases in the state. “The fact remains that corrupt charges against ministers and government officers are on the rise in the recent days. For instance, while the Madurai Bench of MHC has ordered for enquiry imto the gutkha scam, the MHC has also sought explanation from higher education minister for another corruption involving Rs 12 crore,” he said.
